The “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” Poetry Analysis is the perfect activity to engage your students during these cold winter months (or maybe as a great way to cool them down in the summer!). Implementing this poetry analysis is easy:
-
Whole class poetry analysis. Read and analyze the poem as a class, modeling for students the process of analysis. Start with a first read to help students get the gist of the poem.
-
For the second read, start by analyzing the title and answering the questions at the top of the poem. Next, paraphrase as you read by “translating” the poem into your own words in the right hand margin.
-
Do a third read looking specifically at connotative meanings. Explain that connotative meanings are beyond the literal: think figurative language, sounds, and form. Take notes on the connotative meaning during the third read.
-
End by analyzing the poet’s attitude and the development of theme. Answers are provided at the end of this document for reference.
The “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” Poetry Analysis engages students in meaningful, standards based learning while capturing the magic of Robert Frost's poetry.

Enjoy! Happy teaching!
